15-Minute Crispy Orange Tofu (22g Protein) Better Than Takeout

A bowl of crispy orange tofu coated in a glossy homemade orange sauce, served over fluffy rice with green onions, sesame seeds, and fresh orange zest.

If you're craving takeout but don't want to spend the money, this Crispy Orange Tofu is about to become your new weeknight favorite. Every crispy bite is coated in a sweet, sticky, citrusy homemade orange sauce that's bursting with fresh flavor. Best of all, it's ready in just 15 minutes, packed with 22 grams of plant-based protein per serving, and costs a fraction of ordering takeout.

This is one of those recipes that feels like a restaurant meal without the restaurant price. Whether you're feeding the family or meal prepping lunches for the week, you'll love how quickly this comes together with simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

For the Crispy Tofu

2 (14-ounce) Blocks Extra-Firm Tofu, pressed

4 Tablespoons Cornstarch

1 tsp Garlic Powder

1/2 tsp Salt

1/2 tsp Black Pepper

4 Tablespoons Avocado oil (or neutral oil)

Orange Sauce

3/4 cup Fresh Orange Juice (about 2 large oranges)

2 tsp Orange Zest

3 Tablespoons Low-Sodium Soy Sauce

3 Tablespoons Maple Syrup

1 Tablespoon Rice Vinegar

3 Garlic Cloves, minced

1 Tablespoon Fresh Grated Ginger

1 Tablespoon Cornstarch

2 Tablespoons Water

(You can double the sauce as well, I highly recommend it!)

For Serving

4 cups Cooked Jasmine Rice or Brown Rice

2 Green Onions, sliced

Sesame Seeds

Extra Orange Zest (optional)

Forget expensive takeout—this Crispy Orange Tofu delivers all the bold flavors you love in less time than it takes for delivery to arrive. Extra-firm tofu is lightly coated in cornstarch before being pan-fried until beautifully golden and crispy. Then it's tossed in a homemade orange sauce made with fresh orange juice, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, maple syrup, and a touch of rice vinegar for the perfect balance of sweet and tangy.

Unlike many restaurant versions that rely on deep frying and lots of oil, this recipe keeps things simple while still delivering incredible texture. The rough edges of torn tofu become wonderfully crispy, giving every bite plenty of surface area to soak up that glossy orange glaze.

With over 22 grams of protein per serving, this meal is filling enough for dinner yet light enough to enjoy any night of the week. Serve it over steamed jasmine rice with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, sliced green onions, and fresh orange zest for a colorful dinner that's guaranteed to satisfy even the biggest takeout cravings.

Once you realize you can make restaurant-quality orange tofu in just 15 minutes, you may never order takeout again.

Instructions

Press the tofu for about 15 minutes using paper towels or a tofu press to remove as much moisture as possible. Tear the tofu into bite-sized pieces instead of cutting cubes. The rough edges become extra crispy.

In a large bowl, combine the cornstarch, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Toss the tofu until every piece is lightly coated.

Heat the avocado oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu in a single layer. You may have to do this in batches.

Cook for 4–5 minutes without stirring so the tofu develops a crispy golden crust. Flip and cook another 3–4 minutes until browned on all sides.

While the tofu cooks, whisk together the orange juice, orange zest, soy sauce, maple syrup, rice vinegar, ginger, cornstarch, and water.

Remove the tofu and place on a paper towel, pour out the excess oil. Saute the garlic for 30 seconds in the pan. Pour the sauce into the skillet and heat for about 30 second, then add the tofu back into the pan.

Cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring gently, until the sauce thickens into a glossy glaze that coats every piece.

Serve immediately over hot jasmine rice and garnish with green onions, sesame seeds, and additional orange zest.

Enjoy!

Tips

  • Pressing the tofu removes excess moisture, helping it become much crispier.

  • Tearing the tofu instead of cutting it creates jagged edges that crisp beautifully.

  • Don't stir the tofu too early. Let it brown before flipping.

  • Fresh orange juice gives the sauce a brighter flavor than bottled juice, but use bottled if thats all you have.

  • Double the sauce if you like extra for drizzling over rice or vegetables. I highly recommend this.

Storage

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Reheat in a skillet over medium heat for the crispiest texture or microwave until warmed through.
